Routine Exams and Cleanings
Has it been a while since your last dental exam and cleaning? Don’t worry—we’re here to help! Whether you are nervous about coming to the dental office, or maybe life just got in the way and you missed an appointment or two, we want to help get you back on track with routine dental exams.
Frequency of Routine Visits
We follow the American Dental Association (ADA) recommendations that healthy adults and children see a dentist every six months for comprehensive exams, cleanings, and any needed x-rays. These visits are important for several reasons. First, they give your professional dental team a chance to find any issues early, rather than after they turn into something more serious—and more expensive—to repair. Second, these visits allow our team to give you that deep cleaning you just can’t get at home. Finally, routine exams for adults generally lead to better oral care at home.
What to Expect During the Dental Exam
During your routine visits, we complete a comprehensive exam to evaluate your dental health, including:
- X-rays and pictures: Our team will take a full set of digital, low-radiation x-rays and intra-oral pictures that help us evaluate your teeth, bone, and surrounding tissue. The intra-oral pictures also help you see and understand your dental health.
- Oral cancer screening: We conduct a visual screening for oral cancer, which can be life-threatening if not identified. We will let you know if we see any abnormalities that need to be investigated further.
- Full assessment: We will assess your teeth for signs of wear or decay, check existing restorations (fillings and crowns) to verify they are still in good shape, look at your gum health, and make sure your bite is balanced. Once we have completed the exam, we will discuss our findings with you and review in detail any treatment needs that you have. If you have questions, we will be happy to get the answers you need to feel confident in the next steps.
Completing the Cleaning After the Exam
If everything looks good and you are only in need of a standard cleaning, we generally complete this during your appointment. However, we want all our patients to know that if we find evidence of periodontal disease, you may need a different type of cleaning to properly treat these areas. We will discuss this with you at your appointment, and get you scheduled for the proper periodontal treatment you need to get your oral health back on track.
